Award-winning researcher and FCLV founder Dr. Bruce Shapiro Dr. Shapiro has long been one of the leaders in advancing the science and practice of reproductive endocrinology in the United States.

His lifelong commitment to research and innovation, along with his friendly and caring attitude, has helped make our premier fertility center a place of hope for those seeking to overcome infertility and grow their families. Dr. Bruce Shapiro’s research background and long-standing commitment to making IVF safer and more effective have led to many innovations.

He was one of the first physicians in the United States to perform and report on blastocyst transfer, a procedure that allows fewer embryos to be transferred into the uterus while maintaining high pregnancy rates and reducing the risk of higher-order multiple births (triplets and higher). He received a research award for this work.

Bruce Shapiro, MD, also played a key role in developing the technique for cryopreserved and extended post-thaw culture (PTEC) of fertilized oocytes, demonstrating the importance of embryo-endometrial synchronization for implantation. He received another research award for this work.

Dr. Shapiro was one of the first people in the world to standardize the use of a GnRH agonist trigger for high responders to ovarian stimulation, a practice that virtually eliminated ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).

His innovations also include combining a GnRH agonist with low-dose hCG to achieve the benefits of each trigger. This work has resulted in a greater likelihood of pregnancy with fewer complications for patients who have previously experienced IVF failure and/or OHSS.
